Chicken with Chinese potato (Kozhi koorka peralan)


  • Coconut oil – 3 to 4 tablespoon
  • Mustard seed – 1 tsp
  • Ginger – 1 1/2 tablespoon (finely chopped)
  • Garlic – 1 1/2 tablespoon (finely chopped)
  • Dried red chilli – 10 numbers (crushed)
  • Onion – 3 numbers (sliced)
  • Salt – as needed
  • Black pepper powder – 1 1/2 tsp
  • Garam Masala – 1 tsp
  • Fennel powder – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
  • Tomato – 2 numbers (sliced)
  • Green chilli (crushed) – 6 nos (add more if you can handle)
  • Chicken (small cuts) – 750 grams (can use boneless chicken)
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Coriander leaves – ½ cup (chopped)
  • Chinese potato (koorka)- 250 grams ( peeled, chop if it is big in size)
  • Red chilli powder – 1 tsp


In a heated pan add oil. Once the oil is hot add mustard seeds. When the seeds start to pop add ginger and garlic, saute for few seconds. Then add crushed dried red chilli, onion and saute by adding little salt till brown. Now add black pepper powder (1tsp), garam masala powder, fennel powder, turmeric powder and saute till fragrant. After that add tomatoes, green chilli and saute till tomatoes are soft. Now add chicken, curry leaves, coriander leaves and salt as needed. Mix well, cover and cook over low flame. When the chicken is half cooked, add the Chinese potato and continue cooking with covered lid. When the chicken and potatoes are cooked well, add onion, curry leaves and coriander leaves. Add little more oil if needed. Add half tsp of black pepper powder, red chilli powder and mix well. Cook till it is dry and bark brown in colour. Finally garnish with curry and coriander leaves.
