Avil Milk Shake – 5 Flavours (Easy Breakfast – Poha (Rice flakes) milkshake)

Poha or Avil, name of rice flakes in Malayalam, is used in preparing many dishes throughout Kerala. Avil is soaked and mixed with other ingredients like banana to prepare snacks.

Avil Milk is a delicious Malabar or North Kerala special Milk Shake recipe, the combination is of banana and avil / rice flakes. Avil milk is actually a Malabar street drink and available anytime but is also part of the Malabar dishes during Eid, Ramadan, and other special locations. Avil Milk is superbly delicious as well as healthy. It contains lots of dry fruits with the richness of bananas.

Children will have different tastes and so Avil milk can be prepared in 5 different flavors to satisfy the varied taste buds.

Basic Ingredients of Avil Milk

  • Cold milk – 1 cup
  • Mysore banana – 2 nos
  • Rice flakes (Avil) – 1/2 cup
  • Sugar – 2 to 3 tbsp
  • Roasted peanuts – 2 tbsp

Basic preparation of Avil Milk

Dry roast the avil or poha for about 3 minutes or till crispy. In a bowl, mash banana along with 1 tbsp of sugar using a fork. Do not use any blender. Prepare the milk by adding the sugar. Adjust the quantity of sugar according to your taste.

Preparation of the standard avil milk

In a tall serving glass, add the first layer of mashed banana. Then add a thick layer of roasted rice flakes on it. Now pour some milk over it.  With a spoon, gently press down the rice flakes to ensure that the milk seeps to the bottom. Now add a layer of peanuts, then again, a layer of mashed banana, rice flakes, and peanuts. Pour rest of the milk over it. Basic avil milk is ready.

  1. Kids Special: Oreo Avil Milk

Ingredients

  • Oreo Biscuits – A Small Packet

(Along with all the basic ingredients)

Preparation of Oreo Avil Milk

Grind the oreo biscuits into a fine powder. Mix 2 tsp of oreo powder into milk along with sugar. In a tall serving glass, add the first layer of mashed banana. Then a layer of oreo powder and a thick layer of roasted rice flakes on it. Now pour some milk over it.  With a spoon, gently press down the rice flakes to ensure that the milk seeps to the bottom. Now add a layer of peanuts, then again, a layer of mashed banana, oreo powder, rice flakes, and peanuts. Pour rest of the milk over it. Oreo avil milk is ready.

 

  1. Summer Special: Mango Avil Milk:

Ingredients

  • Chopped Mangoes – 2 to 3 tbsps

Preparation of Mango Avil Milk

Blend milk along with sugar and 3 tbsp of chopped mangoes. Mash some chopped mango along with banana and sugar. In a tall serving glass, add the first layer of mashed banana-mango mix. then a thick layer of roasted rice flakes on it. Now pour some milk over it.  With a spoon, gently press down the avil or rice flakes to ensure that the milk seeps to the bottom. Now add a layer of peanuts, then again, a layer of mashed banana, rice flakes, and peanuts. Finally, add some chopped mango on the top. Pour rest of the milk over it. mango avil milk is ready.

  1. Special Avil Milk (Dry fruits – vanilla avil milk)

Ingredients

  • Mixed dry Fruits – 2 to 3 tbsp
  • Condensed milk – 1 or 2 tbsps
  • Vanilla Ice cream – 1 to 2 scoops
  • Chopped mix fruits – Banana, mango, apple (feel free to add your favourite fruits)

(Along with all the basic ingredients)

Preparation of Special Avil Milk

Add condensed milk into the milk and mix well. In a tall serving glass, add the first layer of mashed banana than some chopped fruits. Then a thick layer of roasted ride flakes on it, then a layer of dry fruits. Now pour some milk over it.  With a spoon, gently press down the rice flakes to ensure that the milk seeps to the bottom. Now add a layer of peanuts, then again, a layer of mashed banana, chopped fruits, rice flakes, and dry fruits. Pour rest of the milk over it. Finally, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the top. Garnish it with some dry fruits. Special vanilla-dry fruits avil milk is ready.

  1. Energy Booster Avil Milk

Ingredients

  • Health drink mix – 1 or 2 Tsp (You can use any similar chocolate-flavored health drink mix like Boost, Bournvita, Horlicks etc)
  • Nutella – 1 spoon (optional)

Preparation of Energy Booster Avil Milk

Add the chocolate health mix powder into the milk and mix well. In a tall serving glass, add the first layer of mashed banana. Then a thick layer of roasted ride flakes on it. Now pour some milk over it.  With a spoon, gently press down the rice flakes to ensure that the milk seeps to the bottom. Now add a layer of peanuts, then again, a layer of mashed banana, rice flakes, and peanuts. Pour rest of the milk over it. Finally, sprinkle some health mix powder on the top and a spoon of Nutella. Energy booster avil milk is ready.
