Vishu Katta (special recipe for vishu breakfast)

  • Thick coconut milk – 2 cups
  • Thin coconut milk – 6 cups
  • Raw rice (red raw rice / unakkalari / payasam rice) – 1 cup (soaked for 15 minutes)
  • Salt – as needed
  • Roasted cumin seed powder – 1 tsp (mix this in thick coconut milk)


Into a pan, add thin coconut milk and bring it to boil. Add soaked rice and salt as needed. Mix well, cover and cook over low flame. Stir in between. When the rice is 95% cooked, add the thick milk mixed with cumin powder. Cover and cook for few more minutes. The mix will start to splutter at this stage and open the lid carefully. Cook till it becomes a stiff but soft paste, by stirring in between. Transfer this to a greased plate or tray. Leave it for cooling. After cooling down cut it to the required size. Have it with melted jaggery syrup or any other curries according to your choice.
